Santander customers and people considering changing banks could have a chance to receive £240 under a new current account switching offer.
The deal is available for eligible customers who switch to Santander’s Everyday Current Account and complete a number of conditions, including moving their current account through the Current Account Switch Service and paying money into a Santander Regular Saver.
The offer is particularly relevant for people planning their finances around the New Year because the £240 payment is made 90 days after the switch request, rather than immediately when the account is opened.
However, there are several conditions that must be met before the bonus is paid.
How the £240 Santander offer works
Santander’s latest offer gives eligible customers £240 when they switch to an Everyday Current Account and save at least £200 into a Santander Regular Saver.
The bank says customers need to request the switch on or after 27 October 2026 using the Current Account Switch Service.
The switch must then be completed within 60 days of the request.
Customers also need to pay at least £1,500 into the new Everyday Current Account and have at least two qualifying household Direct Debits.
There is therefore more to the offer than simply opening a Santander account.
When could the £240 arrive?
The timing is one of the most important details.
Santander says eligible customers will receive the £240 90 days after requesting the switch, provided they have met all the required conditions.
This means someone who requests a qualifying switch around the start of November could potentially receive the payment around the beginning of February.
The exact payment date will depend on when the switch request was made and whether all the conditions have been satisfied.
So customers should not interpret the offer as an instant £240 payment for opening an account.
Who can qualify?
The offer is not available to everyone.
Santander says it is available to people who did not hold a Santander current account on 1 January 2026 and who have not previously received a Santander switcher incentive.
This means some existing Santander customers will not qualify for the £240.
Someone who already has a Santander current account should therefore check the eligibility rules carefully before assuming they can receive the bonus.
You need to switch from another bank
The offer requires a qualifying current account switch.
Santander says customers need to use the Current Account Switch Service (CASS).
The service handles the transfer of the old current account, including eligible payments going into and out of the account.
Santander says the switch can move the account balance, regular income such as salary, pension or benefits, Direct Debits, standing orders and payees.
This can make the process considerably easier than manually closing an account and moving every payment yourself.
What is the Current Account Switch Service?
The Current Account Switch Service is designed to make changing banks easier.
When a customer switches through the service, the participating banks handle the transfer of regular payments and close the old account as part of the process.
Santander says the service is free and includes the transfer of payments going into and out of the old account.
Customers should still check their accounts during the switch and make sure they have enough money available to cover payments.
The £1,500 payment condition
One of the key requirements is paying £1,500 into the Santander Everyday Current Account within 60 days of the switch request.
Santander says this can be paid in one or more instalments.
The £1,500 is not a fee.
It is money that needs to be paid into the account to satisfy the offer conditions.
Customers can therefore use money from their existing account or other eligible sources, provided the bank’s requirements are met.
The important thing is to make sure the £1,500 requirement is completed within the specified timeframe.
You also need two Direct Debits
Another condition is having at least two qualifying household Direct Debits.
This does not mean any two Direct Debits automatically qualify.
Santander lists household bills such as council tax, mobile or home phone bills, broadband, paid-for TV, water, gas and electricity among the qualifying categories.
Customers should therefore check whether their existing Direct Debits fall within Santander’s qualifying list before starting the switch.
A person with two unrelated Direct Debits may not necessarily satisfy the requirement.
The £200 Regular Saver condition
There is another important step that could easily be missed.
Within 60 days of requesting the switch, the customer must pay at least £200 into a Santander Regular Saver held in their own name.
Santander says customers can either open a new Regular Saver or use a Regular Saver they already have open.
This £200 is separate from the £1,500 that needs to be paid into the Everyday Current Account.
In other words, someone trying to qualify needs to plan for both requirements.
You have to keep the accounts open
Meeting the initial conditions is not necessarily enough.
Santander says that when the £240 payment is made, the customer must continue to hold both the Everyday Current Account and Regular Saver.
The account must also have the required two active qualifying household Direct Debits at the time the switcher payment is made.
This means customers should avoid closing the accounts immediately after completing the switch.
Doing so could result in the £240 payment not being made.
Existing Santander customers need to check carefully
People who already bank with Santander may assume they can simply switch another account into Santander and collect the bonus.
That is not necessarily the case.
Santander’s current terms say the offer is only available if the customer did not hold a Santander current account on 1 January 2026, or has not previously received a Santander switcher incentive.
This restriction is important because it prevents some existing customers from qualifying.
Anyone unsure should check Santander’s current switcher terms before making a decision.
What if you switch a joint account?
The switching process can also involve joint accounts, but there are additional requirements.
Santander says that if a customer is switching a joint account, debit card details are required for all applicants.
It also states that a joint account cannot be switched if the new Santander account is only in one person’s name.
People switching joint accounts should therefore make sure the new account structure matches the old account where required.
What happens to salary, pension or benefits?
One useful part of the Current Account Switch Service is that regular income can be moved across.
Santander says regular income such as salary, pension or benefits payments can be transferred as part of the switching process.
For pensioners and people receiving regular benefits, this can be particularly relevant.
However, customers should still check that payments have moved correctly and that the relevant organisations have updated their banking details.
Is the £240 really free money?
The £240 is a cash incentive rather than a reduction in the amount required to fund the account.
Customers need to meet the qualifying conditions.
The £1,500 pay-in requirement means someone needs access to that amount of money, although it is not a cost of the offer.
Likewise, the £200 Regular Saver payment is money being saved rather than a fee paid to Santander.
The key question is whether the Santander account and savings product are suitable for the customer beyond the incentive.
What about the Regular Saver interest rate?
The Santander Regular Saver can provide additional value beyond the switching incentive.
Santander’s current offer information says customers can use a Regular Saver to meet the £200 savings requirement.
The rate and terms of savings products can change, so customers should check the current account information before opening one.
The £240 switching payment and the interest earned on savings are separate benefits.
Could the offer be withdrawn?
Yes.
Santander explicitly states that the offer may be withdrawn at any time and that terms and conditions apply.
This means anyone considering the deal should check the current Santander page and eligibility terms before submitting an application.
A switching offer advertised today should not automatically be assumed to remain available indefinitely.
Is Santander the only bank offering switching cash?
No.
Bank switching incentives are common in the UK, and other banks can offer their own cash payments or rewards.
The value of an offer can change frequently.
Santander’s £240 deal is therefore best considered alongside the account’s normal features, interest rates, overdraft terms and eligibility requirements rather than simply choosing an account because of the headline bonus.
What should customers check before switching?
Before moving a current account, it is worth checking several things.
First, make sure you qualify for the Santander £240 offer.
Next, check that your existing bank participates in the Current Account Switch Service.
Then make sure you can meet the £1,500 pay-in requirement and the £200 Regular Saver condition.
You should also identify two qualifying household Direct Debits that can be moved to the new account.
Finally, check Santander’s latest terms because the offer can be withdrawn or changed.
What happens to the old bank account?
When a full switch is completed through the Current Account Switch Service, the old current account is closed as part of the process.
Santander says payments mistakenly sent to the old account can also be redirected, with the sender being contacted and given the new account details.
This is one of the reasons the switching service can be easier than manually moving individual payments.
However, customers should still monitor both accounts during the transition.
Could the £240 affect your tax?
A bank switching incentive can have tax considerations depending on the nature of the payment and the customer’s circumstances.
Anyone receiving a substantial number of financial rewards should keep records and check the applicable tax treatment.
The £240 should not automatically be described as a Government payment or benefit.
It is a commercial bank switching incentive offered by Santander.
This is completely separate from DWP benefits, State Pension payments or HMRC support.
What does the January angle mean?
For customers who start a qualifying switch during November or December, the 90-day payment timetable means the £240 could potentially arrive during the early part of the following year.
However, the exact month cannot be guaranteed for everyone.
It depends on the date the switch request is made.
For example, a switch requested on 1 November would have a different 90-day payment date from one requested on 20 December.
Customers should therefore use their actual switch request date when working out when the payment may arrive.
The key Santander dates
There are several dates worth remembering:
27 October 2026: Eligible customers can request a qualifying switch under the current offer.
Within 60 days: The switch must be completed, the £1,500 pay-in requirement met and at least £200 paid into the qualifying Regular Saver.
90 days after the switch request: Santander says the £240 payment will be made if all eligibility requirements have been satisfied.
These deadlines are more important than simply opening the account.
Final message for Santander customers
Santander’s latest £240 switching offer could provide a useful cash bonus for eligible customers who are prepared to move their current account and meet the conditions.
But the money is not automatically paid simply for opening an Everyday Current Account.
Customers need to request a qualifying switch from 27 October 2026 onwards, complete the switch within 60 days, pay at least £1,500 into the account, maintain two qualifying household Direct Debits and put at least £200 into a Santander Regular Saver.
Santander says the £240 is then paid 90 days after the switch request, provided the customer still meets the relevant conditions.
Anyone considering the deal should therefore check the latest terms before switching and make sure the Santander account suits their normal banking needs.
The headline £240 may be attractive, but the eligibility rules and timing are what determine whether a customer actually receives it.
