Older people across the UK could receive several different forms of financial support over the winter, with payments and discounts available to help with heating, energy bills and everyday household costs.
For winter 2026/27, the main support includes the Winter Fuel Payment, Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments and Christmas Bonus.
However, these schemes work in very different ways.
Some are paid directly into a bank account, while others are applied as a discount to an energy bill. Some are available because of age, while others depend on receiving certain benefits or experiencing a period of very cold weather.
That means pensioners should not assume that receiving one winter payment automatically qualifies them for all the others.
Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £300
The biggest winter payment for many older people is the Winter Fuel Payment.
For winter 2026/27, people born on or before 27 June 1960 could qualify if they normally live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The payment is worth between £100 and £300, depending on age and household circumstances.
Most eligible people do not need to make a claim.
The Government says most payments should be made automatically during November or December 2026.
Eligible pensioners should receive a letter explaining how much they are due and where the payment will be made.
Who can get the £300 Winter Fuel Payment?
The amount depends on when you were born and who you live with.
Someone living alone, or living with people who are not eligible for Winter Fuel Payment, can receive:
- £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960
- £300 if born before 28 September 1946
Different amounts can apply when two eligible people live together.
For example, where two eligible people do not receive certain means-tested benefits, the household payment can be £100, £150 or £200 depending on their dates of birth.
Where a couple jointly claims certain benefits, the payment can be £200 or £300.
So the £300 figure is a maximum payment rather than a universal amount for every pensioner.
When will Winter Fuel Payment arrive?
Most eligible people will receive their Winter Fuel Payment automatically in November or December 2026.
The money is normally paid into the same account used for State Pension or other benefit payments.
The Government says that if an eligible person has not received their payment or letter by 27 January 2027, they should contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.
This means pensioners should not worry if their payment does not arrive at the beginning of November.
Payments are spread across several weeks.
The £35,000 income rule
There is also an important tax-related condition.
If your total income is above £35,000, HMRC will take back your Winter Fuel Payment.
The repayment is normally handled through your tax code or, where relevant, through Self Assessment.
Your partner’s income does not count towards your individual £35,000 threshold.
This means a pensioner should not automatically assume that receiving the Winter Fuel Payment means they will keep the full amount.
Scotland has a different system
The Winter Fuel Payment rules do not apply in the same way to people living in Scotland.
GOV.UK states that people living in Scotland cannot get the Winter Fuel Payment and may instead be eligible for the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment.
This is important for UK-wide articles because a rule applying in England and Wales should not automatically be presented as applying identically across every part of the UK.
Northern Ireland follows the Winter Fuel Payment eligibility rules, although payments are administered through the Northern Ireland system.
£150 Warm Home Discount
Another major winter support scheme is the Warm Home Discount.
This is worth £150, but it works differently from Winter Fuel Payment.
The money is normally not paid into your bank account.
Instead, eligible households receive a £150 discount on their electricity bill.
This distinction is important because headlines describing it simply as a £150 cash payment can be misleading.
The discount is applied by the electricity supplier.
Who can get the Warm Home Discount?
Eligibility depends on where you live and the rules of the scheme.
In England and Wales, the scheme is aimed at households meeting the relevant low-income and energy-cost criteria, including certain households receiving qualifying benefits.
Pension Credit can be particularly important because it can provide a route to energy support for eligible pensioner households.
The Warm Home Discount does not reduce or replace the Winter Fuel Payment.
The Government confirms that the £150 discount does not affect entitlement to Winter Fuel Payment or Cold Weather Payment.
When does the Warm Home Discount arrive?
The Warm Home Discount is not paid on a fixed date into a bank account.
Instead, the electricity supplier applies the discount to the household’s bill if the customer is eligible.
Some households receive the support automatically, while others may need to contact their supplier depending on where they live and the relevant eligibility route.
People using prepayment meters can also qualify.
The supplier can explain how the £150 support will be applied, such as through a voucher or top-up arrangement.
£25 Cold Weather Payment
Older people on low incomes could also receive Cold Weather Payments during the winter.
The payment is worth £25 for each qualifying seven-day period of very cold weather.
For winter 2026/27, the scheme runs from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027.
Unlike Winter Fuel Payment, this support is triggered by the weather.
A payment is made when the average temperature in the relevant area is recorded or forecast to be 0°C or below for seven consecutive days.
There is no fixed maximum number of payments in the basic description of the scheme, so multiple qualifying cold-weather periods can result in multiple £25 payments.
Who qualifies for Cold Weather Payments?
Cold Weather Payments are linked to certain benefits and circumstances.
People receiving Pension Credit can normally qualify.
Some people receiving Universal Credit, income-related ESA and other qualifying support can also receive the payment if additional conditions are met.
The payment is automatic if the person qualifies.
There is normally no separate application for each cold-weather period.
When will the £25 arrive?
After a qualifying cold-weather period, eligible people should normally receive the payment within 14 working days.
The money is paid into the same bank or building society account as the relevant benefit.
This means pensioners should not expect the £25 payment on a particular calendar date.
It depends on whether the temperature trigger is reached in their area.
Scotland does not use Cold Weather Payments
Scotland has a different arrangement.
People living in Scotland cannot receive Cold Weather Payments.
Instead, they may qualify for an annual Winter Heating Payment, which is not dependent on a seven-day period of freezing temperatures.
This is another reason pensioners should check the scheme that applies to their nation rather than relying on a UK-wide assumption.
The £10 Christmas Bonus
There is also a smaller payment that can arrive around Christmas.
The Christmas Bonus is a one-off, tax-free £10 payment for people who receive certain qualifying benefits during the qualifying week.
The qualifying week is normally the first full week of December.
People do not need to make a separate claim if they qualify.
The payment is normally made automatically before Christmas.
Although £10 is much smaller than the Winter Fuel Payment, it is still worth checking because it is separate from the other winter support schemes.
How will the Christmas Bonus appear?
The payment can appear in a bank statement with the reference “DWP XB”.
The Government confirms that the Christmas Bonus does not affect other benefits.
It is therefore different from the Winter Fuel Payment and should not be confused with an increase in State Pension.
Can pensioners receive more than one payment?
Yes.
A person can potentially receive more than one type of winter support if they satisfy the different eligibility conditions.
For example, an eligible pensioner could receive a Winter Fuel Payment and also qualify for the Warm Home Discount.
If they receive Pension Credit and their area experiences a qualifying period of cold weather, they could also receive a Cold Weather Payment.
The Christmas Bonus is another separate payment for people receiving certain qualifying benefits.
There is no general rule saying that receiving one payment automatically prevents someone from receiving another.
Pension Credit could unlock extra support
For lower-income pensioners, Pension Credit can be particularly important.
It is not itself a winter one-off payment, but qualifying for Pension Credit can provide access to additional support.
This can include help linked to heating and energy costs as well as other forms of assistance.
It can also affect eligibility for some winter schemes.
This is why pensioners with a low income should not simply check whether they are receiving Winter Fuel Payment.
They should also check whether they could qualify for Pension Credit.
What if you have savings?
Having savings does not automatically mean a pensioner cannot receive Pension Credit.
The Pension Credit rules take savings and investments into account in the calculation, but there is not a simple rule that anyone with savings is automatically excluded.
This can be important for pensioners who own their home or have some money set aside.
If your circumstances have changed since you last checked your entitlement, it may be worth checking again.
Do not confuse winter payments with State Pension increases
Another important distinction is between winter support and the annual State Pension uprating.
The State Pension can rise as part of the Triple Lock, but that is not a one-off winter payment.
Winter Fuel Payment, Warm Home Discount and Cold Weather Payment are separate forms of support.
A pensioner’s regular State Pension income should therefore not be added to these payments when calculating a supposed “winter bonus”.
Doing so can make the total appear much larger than the actual additional support a household will receive.
Watch out for winter payment scams
Older people should also be careful about messages claiming that they need to provide bank details to receive winter support.
The Government warns that people may receive fraudulent calls, emails or messages pretending to be government services.
The official Winter Fuel Payment guidance specifically warns against messages asking for personal information such as bank details or passwords.
Pensioners should not click suspicious links or provide financial information simply because a message claims they are entitled to a payment.
Full winter support list at a glance
The main winter payments and support older people should know about are:
| Support | Amount | Main trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Winter Fuel Payment | £100–£300 | Age and circumstances |
| Warm Home Discount | £150 | Eligible energy/low-income criteria |
| Cold Weather Payment | £25 per qualifying period | Certain benefits + cold weather |
| Christmas Bonus | £10 | Certain qualifying benefits |
These schemes are separate and have different rules.
What pensioners should check now
With winter approaching, older people should check four things.
First, check whether you qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment and whether your letter has arrived.
Second, check whether your household qualifies for the Warm Home Discount.
Third, if you receive Pension Credit or another qualifying benefit, keep an eye on Cold Weather Payment triggers.
Finally, check whether you receive a qualifying benefit for the Christmas Bonus.
If your circumstances have changed, make sure the relevant department has up-to-date information.
When should the money arrive?
The payment dates vary considerably.
Winter Fuel Payment: most eligible people are paid in November or December 2026.
Warm Home Discount: applied to the electricity bill rather than normally being paid into a bank account.
Cold Weather Payment: £25 after each qualifying seven-day cold period, normally within 14 working days.
Christmas Bonus: normally paid before Christmas.
This means there is no single “winter payment day” for pensioners.
The key message for older people
There are several different forms of winter support available during 2026/27, but they are not all automatic and they do not all work in the same way.
The biggest direct winter payment is the Winter Fuel Payment of up to £300 for eligible older people.
The Warm Home Discount provides £150 off an electricity bill, while eligible people can receive £25 for each qualifying cold-weather period under the Cold Weather Payment scheme.
The Christmas Bonus adds another £10 for people receiving certain qualifying benefits.
For pensioners on lower incomes, checking Pension Credit can be just as important because it can open the door to additional support.
The main thing is not to assume that one payment covers everything.
Check each scheme separately, watch for official letters and bank payments, and be particularly careful with scam messages asking for personal or banking information.
